Rental Rates and Guidelines

NIFCO members’ payment for the use of NIFCO equipment and facilities is based on the financing of their project. It is the responsibility of the filmmaker to include accurate costs for NIFCO rentals in all budgets, based on NIFCO’s current published rates. A copy of the rate card can be downloaded here.

The Board evaluates the financing and funding structure of each project to determine what percentage of the total rental fees will be paid, based on these guidelines:

CATEGORY 1 - NIFCO Members/Independent Filmmakers
(25% of published rate)
Reserved for super-low budget projects where significant labour deferrals are in place.
Filmmakers should first consult with NIFCO staff before applying.

CATEGORY 2 - NIFCO Members/Independent Filmmakers
(50% of published rate)
Eligibility of project and filmmaker must be approved by the Board.

CATEGORY 3 - Cultural Institutions
(75% of published rate)
This would pertain to projects that are fully funded by cultural institutions such as the National Film Board.

CATEGORY 4 - Published Rate
Fair market value for services rendered.

  • Final decision on eligibility rests with the NIFCO board of directors.
  • All productions must provide proof of production insurance and name NIFCO as loss payee.
  • Rates are based on daily, weekly and monthly durations. Continuous rentals are discounted according to a consecutive weekly rental “4 day week” or a consecutive monthly rental “3 day week.”
  • Rates are subject to change without notice.
  • If a production runs over its allotted time, it loses its scheduling priority but can continue to use the equipment and facilities until the film is finished.
  • The filmmaker shall give NIFCO a screen credit. No person can use the NIFCO letterhead or name without permission of the board.
  • NIFCO will retain the right to screen films for funders such as the Canada Council, to screen at the AGM and for training purposes such as NIFCO workshops.
  • NIFCO reserves the right to refuse services to projects that may be in contravention of the Criminal Code of Canada as defined by Telefilm Canada guidelines.
  • All rentals are subject to terms and conditions outlined on rental agreement and NIFCO rental policy guidelines. Weekly and long term rental discounts are available. Rates are subject to change without notice.
