August 3, 2010 (Vancouver, BC) – The 6th Annual Vancouver Women in Film Festival, scheduled to take place March 4-8, 2011 in Vancouver, Canada, officially launched its Call for Submissions today, looking for short and feature film submissions in all genres. The 2010 Festival received hundreds of submissions from all over the world.

All independent filmmakers (women and men) seeking a Vancouver premiere are encouraged to apply. Submissions featuring strong female characters and stories are encouraged. Eligible films must have THREE of the following (one woman may serve in more than one role): a woman as Writer, a woman as Producer, a woman as Director, a woman as D.O.P., a woman as Lead Actor, a woman as Lead Animator / Editor.

NSI Features First

NSI Features First – training to help get your first feature film made

Winnipeg, MB - Canadian filmmaking teams working on their first or second feature film can apply for training through NSI Features First. Run by Canada’s National Screen Institute (NSI), the program prepares you for production through customized, intensive training and mentoring with industry professionals. It aims to help filmmakers hone their script while also understanding the business aspects of feature film development.

The teams chosen for the program are not required to pay tuition fees or relocate and, after initial training, learning opportunities are developed close to home.

Teams must apply with a feature film script. Up to four teams are chosen for this 10-month, three-phase program and are selected based on the strength of their film concepts and the potential development and packaging of their film projects. The curriculum includes script and story development, market research, legal requirements, pitching, financing, distribution as well as marketing and sales training – delivered by leaders in the Canadian film industry.

She Writes Short Shorts — a summer screenwriting intensive for women.

The Atlantic Filmmakers Co-op (AFCOOP) in conjunction with the FILM 5 program and Women in Film and Television – Atlantic (WIFT-AT) is pleased to present a summer screenwriting intensive with screenwriter Tricia Fish, (New Waterford Girl).

The program is designed to foster talent among emerging female screenwriters in the Atlantic region. The workshop will take place in two weekend intensives, Aug. 14th/15th and 28th/29th 2010. Applicants will apply with a short film script suitable for a five – seven minute film. A jury of local screenwriters will select up to ten scripts to be developed through the workshop. Scripts can be any genre.

National Artists Program Applications

The Provincial Government is encouraging young artists to apply for the 2011 National Artists Program (NAP), a mentorship program for artists ages 16-22 offered in conjunction with the upcoming Canada Winter Games, taking place in Halifax, Nova Scotia, February 11-27, 2011.

“This two-week program offers young artists the exciting opportunity to gain increased knowledge and professional development in their chosen discipline,” said the Honourable Terry French, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation.

“The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador remains committed to our province’s emerging artists and arts community, and I encourage young men and women throughout the province to take advantage of this program and all the benefits it has to offer up-and-coming artists.”

Three artists will be selected from each province/territory, for a total of 39 participants. Team Newfoundland and Labrador artists will be selected by a jury of established artists based on artistic talent, commitment to the creative development of their artistic discipline, and ability to collaborate. Under the guidance of senior arts facilitators, NAP participants will engage in a variety of training and presentation opportunities. Costs associated with travel, accommodations and meals will be covered by the Canada Games. The deadline to submit an application is September 30, 2010.

Audition for “Easy, Down Easy”

This message is forwarded on behalf of the Grand Bank Regional Theatre Festival and the Resource Centre for the Arts Theatre Company.

Joanna Pollyanna is a hardscrabble tender hearted gal from the wrong side of the Montreal tracks. She is between 40 and 55, hung out with the likes of Joni Mitchell and Gordon Lightfoot, but a bad moon rising brought her some bad luck and she’s found sanctuary on a mountain top with a disgraced university prof, whom she adores. She’s smart. She’s resourceful.

This supporting role in Gordon Pinsent’s new play Easy, Down Easy requires the actress to spend the summer with the Grand Bank Regional Theatre Festival and includes the St. John’s run at the LSPU HalllJune 14-Aug. 27 and Sept 27-Oct 10, 2010. There will be a four week hiatus – Aug 29-Sept 26, 2010.

This is a co-production between the GBRTF and RCAT, under the auspices of Berni Stapleton and Amy House.

NLFDC & IATSE 849 Camera Car Workshop

On June 24-26, the NLFDC, in partnership with IATSE Local 849 will present a workshop on a recently purchased Chevrolet 4×4 Camera Car with crane, process trailer, and pan/steer dolly. The course will be instructed by Dolly Grip, Roy Benson and Bill Hong, Camera Car specialist for William F. White International. Bill’s extensive resume includes work on The Dark Knight, Amelia, The Incredible Hulk and numerous other blockbuster films.

There will be three segments to this workshop. The first being held on June 24th for selected key crew members in the province, the second for general interested crew and the third will be an open demonstration for producers, marketing firms, and other interested parties.

Short Film Faceoff III

Following the success of the first two years of our television showcase for Atlantic Canadian short films, the Atlantic Film Festival Association and CBC Atlantic are pleased to announce a third season of Short Film Faceoff. The critically acclaimed show aired in 2008 and 2009 and brought a new and large mainstream audience for Atlantic Canadian short films and increased profile for their filmmakers.

Films that participated in the 2009 Atlantic Film Festival are automatically entered for consideration in this year’s Short Film Faceoff. In addition, Short Film Faceoff will be seeking new films that have been produced in the region in 2009/10. Films chosen for Short Film Faceoff will be eligible for participation in the 30th Atlantic Film Festival in September. Films must be under 12 minutes in length; must not have been previously broadcast on television and must have been produced by Atlantic Canadians. Directors must be available for tapings at CBC Halifax. The exact shooting dates likely be in the last two weeks of May 2010. Again this year, a panel of industry professionals will provide commentary and discuss the creative and technical aspects of the films with the filmmakers on air.

The series also has a competitive component. The panellists will choose their top films and ultimately the viewing public gets to vote for their favourite film. CBC and our sponsors will be offering a prize made up of cash and production services to be used by the winning filmmaker towards his or her next film.

Nickel Call for Screenplays

Do you have a short film script? Maybe it’s your first script — maybe it’s your 100th…

The 6th annual Screenplay Series Workshop offers emerging and established independent filmmakers a valuable part of the script-writing process – a public reading by actors and feedback from screenwriters on your first draft.

The Nickel Independent Film Festival is looking for submissions of short screenplays for its 6th annual Screenplay Series Workshop to be held during the festival in June.

Workshop Description:

Facilitated by Lois Brown, a professional committee comprised of local producers, writers, and filmmakers will select three screenplays from all submissions received. The selected writers will receive a script consultation from a working professional screenwriter a week prior to the workshop. Following this, the writer may choose to do rewrites. On June 25, scripts are rehearsed by professional actors and a guest director in the morning, followed by a public reading in the afternoon. The audience is invited to give feedback to the writers after the reading.

Michelle Jackson Emerging Filmmaker Awad

The St. John’s International Women’s Film Festival announces the call for submissions for the inaugural RBC Michelle Jackson Emerging Filmmaker Award.

In January 2008, filmmaker Michelle Jackson contracted viral myocarditis and died suddenly and unexpectedly. It was an event that shocked the film community here and abroad. In those early days of trying to comprehend Michelle’s loss, Noreen Golfman, Chair of the St. John’s International Women’s Film Festival, with the encouragement of the Panting and Jackson families, initiated the Michelle Jackson Emerging Filmmaker Fund. Since its formation, the fund has raised several thousand dollars for the trust and has amassed a number of sponsors for the annual award.

Introducing NIFCO’s Super 8 Workshop

Experience the beauty of Super 8mm.

Shoot your own Super 8mm short film! In this workshop, you will gain access to all the skills and equipment you need to make a short Super 8mm film. You’ll learn all aspects of operating a Super 8mm camera, with emphasis on getting the best exposure. Participants will have the opportunity to shoot their own Super 8mm film, and get to know the techniques of film editing on AVID. The final sound/music can be either a score or voice over or BOTH recorded during post production. By the end of the workshop each filmmaker should have a 2-4 minute complete Super 8mm film.
