THE BABY FORMULA comes to St. John’s on August 22

First Weekend Club, Women in Film and Television–Atlantic and the St. John’s International Women’s Film Festival present…

THE BABY FORMULA, directed by Alison Reid

In the beginning… sperm came from men

“funny, rueful, absurd, angry, hysterical” The Gazette

Two adventurous women in love are desperate to have their own biological child. They take a chance on an experimental scientific process and make sperm from their own stem cells. Pregnant with humour and unexpected twists, their journey tailspins out of control when their families discover there is no father.

ST. JOHN’S screening of THE BABY FORMULA:
7:30pm Saturday, August 22, doors open at 7:00pm
Inco Innovation Centre Theatre, Memorial University
Q&A and reception with Director Alison Reid to follow the film
Tickets: $10 at the door

THE BABY FORMULA (http://thebabyformula.wordpress.com/stills/) is truly a story of life imitating art: the coincidences that occurred in the making of this film blur the line between fiction and reality.

Director, Alison Reid was on the festival circuit with her short film, SUCCUBUS – a dramedy about Athena and Lilith, a lesbian couple attempting to conceive a baby that is a true biological combination of them both – when she discovered that lead actresses, Angela Vint and Megan Fahlenbock, were both pregnant!

Reid immediately saw an opportunity for a feature-length sequel. The premise of THE BABY FORMULA would be that Athena and Lilith are the first women in the world giving birth to each other’s babies.

Meet Alison Reid at her St. John’s screening of THE BABY FORMULA at The Inco Innovation Centre Theatre, Memorial University, St. John’s, NL at 7:30pm Saturday, August 22. Doors open at 7:00pm. Q&A and reception to follow the screening. Tickets are available at the door for $10.

“Ferron: girl on a road” at InsideOut, Toronto’s Gay & Lesbian Film Festival.

(Visit Augusta Productions for more information on this film.)

Before the Indigo Girls and before Ani DiFranco, there was Ferron, whose plaintive and poetic songs provided the soundtrack for an entire generation of lesbians. Nearing 60 and feeling the urge to reconnect with her audience, Ferron reunites with her band to perform a concert after nearly a decade away. Internationally award-winning director Gerry Rogers (My Left Breast) is there to capture the moment.

Part performance film, part biopic, “Ferron: girl on a road” traces, the life, the songs, the loves, the heartbreaks, and the pioneering path carved by a true folk legend. Intimate, and sweeping all at once, this film moves beyond “chronicle” and captures in word and deed, the essence of a visionary artist, and the soul of an icon.

Opening on British Columbia´s Saturna Island, where Ferron welcomes her band mates into her home to rehearse, the action shifts to a stage in Victoria, where Ferron and the band perform some of her most adored songs-Shadows on a Dime, Girl on a Road and Snowin´ in Brooklyn. Interspersed between tunes are interviews with the band members and with Ferron herself, who talks openly about her painful childhood, her rise and fall in the music industry, her past feelings of shame regarding her Native ancestry and, finally, about coming to terms with herself after a lifetime of struggles.

“FERRON: girl on a road” premiers at InsideOut, Toronto’s Gay & Lesbian Film Festival, Sunday, May 17, 5pm at the ROM. Both Ferron and Director Gerry Rogers in attendance.

A true love story about murder, friendship, betrayal and family. Dr. Andrew Bagby was murdered by Dr. Shirley Turner, the mother of his unborn child. Childhood friend and filmmaker Kurt Kuenne set out to make this film for Bagby’s son, Zachary, as a way to introduce him to his father. Meanwhile Andrew’s parents, David and Kate Bagby, embark on a new life in Newfoundland to be closer to their grandson. Just when it appears that they might prevail over almost insurmountable legal hurdles, something unimaginable happens. An unforgettable story.
