From now until December 24th, we’re asking people to kindly donate a turkey to the Community Food Sharing Association (your local food bank). The turkeys will be given to those less fortunate people in Newfoundland and Labrador during the Christmas season.

Last year, the lovely and generous people of this province donated 6600 turkeys and I think that’s fabulous! I also think we can beat that number this year… and we could really use your help in doing that.

I’m asking you to forward this email to all of your contacts (schools, businesses, friends, families, organizations) to let them all know that the Turkey Drive is happening from now until Christmas Eve. Some of the people I spoke with on the phone said they’d put the information on internal websites — please feel free to do this as well. I’ve also attached a poster and it would be great if you could print some and post them around your building.

Drop off locations and times can be found by going to www.cbc.ca/nl. Donations can also be made online by going to the CBC website.

Something a little different this year: we’ve decided to give away a Turkey Spirit Award to the business or organization that donates the most turkeys. A Junior Turkey Spirit Award will go to the school that does the same. A little bit of friendly competition for a worthy cause!

If you have any questions at all, please give me a call at (709)576-5150. You can also send me an email at amy.joy@cbc.ca.

Thanks so much in advance for taking the time to spread the word about the Turkey Drive. I can assure you that your generosity will make someone’s Christmas that much better.

Thanks again,

The Queen of Paradise’s Garden A PUPPET SHOW for All Ages
A Newfoundland Fairy Tale Told by ANDY JONES With Puppets by DARKA ERDELJI Available for private parties, corporate events and schools!
Great for Christmas parties call 691.9923

COMING UP, DON’T MISS…..JANUARY 3rd and 4th 2009, TWO shows of “The Queen Of Paradise’s Garden” daily at 2:30pm and 4:30pm at Gower St. United Church family rates available.

This production was a big hit at the recent St. John’s Storytelling Festival and it really is a show for all ages — three to 93! At the Storytelling Festival the three year olds were as captivated as the older children, the teenagers and the adults. Andy Jones, of course, always seems to draw the whole audience into a story.

The performance is about a half hour in length and it involves Andy Jones telling and acting out the story beside a kitchen-table sized box that is the set – the set has compartments that open and the box is turned around to create a different scene for parts of the story.
Darka Erdelji brings the hand-held puppets to life during the storytelling and there are some live sound effects to create a magical atmosphere. It is a very sweet show and elements of Christmas are included.

The show features puppets by Slovenian Theatre Artist Darka Erdelji, who has her Masters in Puppetry and Andy Jones tells the story of Jack in the Queen of Paradise’s Garden. “Jack” is a well-known figure in traditional Newfoundland fairy tales – (Jack Meets the Cat, Jack and the Three Giants, Little Jack the Little Fisherman, etc..) and these are stories which Andy has learned over the years from an older generation of Newfoundlanders that he turns into wonderful theatrical storytelling productions. The Queen of Paradise’s Garden was originally told to Andy Jones by Albert Heber Keeping of Grand Bank, Fortune Bay. (Albert Heber keeping learned the story from Billy Quann of Sagona Island, Fortune Bay.) So, the tradition continues!
