Focus on Arts Funding: a report from the Standing Committee on Canadian Heritage
and another one on cultural infrastructure.

Just the facts
Two recently released reports on arts funding have refocused the debate on federal government investments in the arts and culture sector.

The Standing Committee on Canadian Heritage recently published a report further to the hearings held in the wake of funding cuts to the arts made over the course of the summer and fall of 2008. The Committee heard from a wide range of witnesses that testified about the impact of the cuts on current and future activities and the financial stability of the sector.

We need your feedback as soon as possible in order to prepare a brief on behalf of the media arts sector.

ACI Cultural Jobs Board

The next major piece for the Association of Cultural Industries of Newfoundland Labrador’s popular website has just gone live: the Cultural Jobs Board — a module inspired by ACI’s ongoing human resources research. This jobs board allows those seeking employment in the cultural sector to browse jobs around the province and country, while also allowing anyone already signed up for an ACI account to post job descriptions on the site.

In 2008, the Association of Cultural Industries of Newfoundland Labrador (ACI) redesigned its website as a Web 2.0 destination for cultural workers, audiences, and consumers. Users can either browse the content online or create a “Facebook”-like profile that will allow them to add content to the site, including biographies, event listings, training profiles, and job postings — thereby promoting their work, products, shows, courses, businesses, etc.

The very popular Cultural Calendar was released in July, and allows users to see cultural event listings across the province or narrow their choices by geographic area and artistic discipline. Also released at this time was the Mentorship and Training Database, which allows users to either seek cultural training around the province or post their own training and mentorship offerings.

For more information or comment, please contact ACI Executive Director George Murray at 709.738.4333

ACI is a pan-provincial, pan-cultural not-for-profit organization serving as a unified voice, acting as advocate, and performing research on behalf of professional artists and arts organizations in Newfoundland Labrador. ACI was the main force behind the white paper that informed the provincial government’s document Creative Newfoundland and Labrador: A Blueprint for Development and Investment in Culture. In 2008, ACI celebrated 10 years of advocacy. ACI is continually working to provide a nexus for communications between artists and arts organizations, the government, and the public.

IFTA’s FightForIndependents.org

IFTA’s Members are virtually unable to license their films and programs to television in the United States since the studios, broadcast and cable networks have combined into a few large conglomerates.   These same forces threaten the opportunities for independent programs on the Internet.

We have raised our concerns about the negative effect of media consolidation on the public’s access to independent and diverse programs to Congress and the Federal Communications Commission.  That message now will be renewed to the Obama Administration.

To raise awareness of this vital issue, we have launched a new website: FightForIndependents.org

Here you will find information, videos and a petition to the new FCC.  Please take a look, sign the petition, and pass it along to others who care about independent media! And please check back often for news.

Best regards,
Jean Prewitt, President & CEO

The Political Crisis Almost Eclipses the Economic Crisis (CAA Bulletin)

CCA BULLETIN 50/08

The Political Crisis Almost Eclipses the Economic Crisis

Just the Facts

Canadians witnessed high political drama this past week as the government was challenged with a possible successful non-confidence vote on the Economic Update delivered the preceding week by the Minister of Finance, the Hon. James Flaherty. The creation of a coalition by the Liberal and New Democrat parties, supported by the Bloc Québécois, threatened to defeat the government on December 8, 2008. The political crisis has been forestalled for the time being by the prorogation by the Governor General of the first session of Parliament after a mere two weeks of business.

What does this mean for the business of government? The Prime Minister has now promised that Parliament will reconvene on January 26, 2009 and a new federal budget replete with stimulant measures will be delivered on January 27, 2009. In the meantime, Cabinet retains its full powers to make appointments and to deal with the day to day business of running the government. The main impact of the crisis for the arts and culture sector is that since there was insufficient time for the government to place legislation on the Order Paper, revisions to the Copyright Act are once again in limbo.
