It brought Jeanne Beker to Newfoundland and put an emerging filmmaker’s first film on the St. John’s International Women’s Film Festival’s closing night gala screen.

Initiated in honour of Michelle Jackson, a young Newfoundland filmmaker and student mentor who passed away suddenly in 2008, the RBC Michelle Jackson Emerging Filmmaker Award supports emerging female filmmakers residing in Newfoundland and Labrador. The competition is open to female Newfoundland and Labrador filmmakers who have not yet directed a feature film. Applicants are asked to submit a script for a six-minute short film, a production schedule and budget. Scripts will be judged by a selected panel.

The winner will receive close to $40,000 in cash and in-kind production services for their film, and will be mentored by award-winning director and producer Anita Reilly McGee. The winner’s film will premiere on the closing night of the 23rd Annual St. John’s International Women’s Film Festival, on October 20th, 2012, at the Arts and Culture Centre.

Last year’s winner is the Newfoundland and Labrador Arts Council’s 2012 Artist of the Year, Ruth Lawrence, who filmed Two Square Feet, starring Jeanne Beker. The film is about a woman coping with a divorce who meets someone that changes her life forever. Allison White, an up-and-coming producer and director, was the inaugural winner in 2010. She used the prize to make Decoloured, a short film about a colour blind man whose vision is changed when he falls in love.

For instructions on how to apply for the RBC Michelle Jackson Emerging Filmmaker Award, visit the St. John’s International Women’s Film Festival webpage:

http://www.womensfilmfestival.com/pg.php?p=23

10 Provinces, 10 Years: Spotlight on Quebec Independent Film
April 5, 2012 8:00pm at the LSPU Hall
Tickets $10

Ten provinces. Ten years. Ten spotlights. That’s the idea behind The Nickel Independent Film Festival’s Spotlight Series. Our goal is to shine the spotlight on ten short films from each of Canada’s ten provinces over the course of ten years. That’s 100 Canadian-made short films to bask in the spotlight by the time the Nickel’s Spotlight Series wraps in 2021. A special curator from each province will act as a provincial programmer, select ten splendid shorts, and send them our way. Our mission is to share the unique culture of each province and applaud the rich diversity of Canadian independent filmmaking and filmmakers.

This year we’ve decided to focus on Quebec Independent Film. Curated by Danny Lennon of Montreal.

Danny Lennon is the Director of Prends ça court! founded twelve years ago. Internationally renowned programmer, he is involved with 20 festivals and events in the province of Quebec. He participates, year round, in over 60 festivals in 24 different countries, contributing in every imaginable and possible ways to the promotion, distribution, screening and production of independent and professional shorts. Lennon is the invited programmer and in charge of the online Short Film Competition (presented by the NFB) at Festival de Cannes/Short Film Corner since 2006. He also acts as an instructor at Montreal’s Institut national de l’image et du son (INIS). He is the film curator for Montreal’s PHI Centre, distributor and sales agent for PHI Group, ambassador for short film promotion at Sodec, responsible for launching the NOT SHORT ON TALENT initiative at Telefilm Canada.

The final two deadlines for the Nickel’s 11th edition in June 2011 is coming up very soon so get your films to us as early as possible!

February 7 is the Final Deadline with a submission fee of $25.
February 14 is the ultimate extended deadline with a submission fee of $30.

If you submit by withoutabox, your film must be registered that day and mailed right afterwards in order to meet the programming deadlines. If you are posting, we will accept a postmark of Feb 7 or 14 but REMEMBER that the mail can be deadly slow and if it isn’t in the committee’s hands when they meet in March, this can cause you film to get very limited consideration. So Express Post if you can.

If you are comparing us to other festivals, remember that the Nickel pays a SCREENING FEE each time it shows your film (those who’ve been in our festival, subsequent tours, or special screenings can attest) that is at the CARFAC exhibition rates. We also pay for return postage of your exhibition tape and help you come to the festival, to the best of our abilities. We’re low budget but we make it go a long way.

For those who wish to use withoutabox, this link will take you directly to our form.

We are primarily a shorts festival and we showed 70 films last year so the odds are great! We do accept many genres (see the form for details) and are looking for a wide variety of perspectives.

Look forward to seeing your submissions come our way.

6th Annual Vancouver Women in Film Festival (March 4-8, 2011) Seeks Film Submissions

For more information about eligibility criteria and how to submit, please visit:
http://www.womeninfilm.ca/WIFF_2011_Film_Submissions.html

August 3, 2010 (Vancouver, BC) – The 6th Annual Vancouver Women in Film Festival, scheduled to take place March 4-8, 2011 in Vancouver, Canada, officially launched its Call for Submissions today, looking for short and feature film submissions in all genres. The 2010 Festival received hundreds of submissions from all over the world.

All independent filmmakers (women and men) seeking a Vancouver premiere are encouraged to apply. Submissions featuring strong female characters and stories are encouraged. Eligible films must have THREE of the following (one woman may serve in more than one role): a woman as Writer, a woman as Producer, a woman as Director, a woman as D.O.P., a woman as Lead Actor, a woman as Lead Animator / Editor.

“There was such a breadth of vision, expression and storytelling in the submissions we received last year, I’m very excited to see what we’ll be presenting to our audiences in 2011,” says Festival Director and WIFTV Board Member, Roslyn Muir. “In addition, we’ll be bringing back New Media Day, originally introduced in our 2009 festival, where industry experts shed light on new trends and the future of filmmaking in Canada.”

Last year’s opening night feature film, Penelope Buitenhuis’ “A Wake” went on to be part of Telefilm’s Perspective Canada screenings at the 2010 Cannes Film Festival. She was later nominated for Best Director at the DGC 2010 Awards. Writer-director Angelina Cantada, whose film “Let’s Play Boccia!” screened last year, went on to win the $10,000 Omni Television Diversity in Cultures Award at the 2010 Leo Awards in Vancouver.

The Festival is presented by Women in Film and Television Vancouver and is one of our key annual celebration events. In addition to offering independent filmmakers a professional screening opportunity, the festival also serves to build audiences and appreciation for relevant cinema by women.

The festival supports filmmakers with cash awards and artists’ fees. Last year, three filmmakers were the recipients of the Legacy Awards, representing $1500 in cash awards. Award-winning filmmaker Lulu Keating was the 2010 recipient of the Women In the Director’s Chair Feature Film Award, presented by Creative Women Workshops Association, represents industry leadership and support from some of the most significant companies in western Canada and is valued at nearly $100,000.

The early bird postmark deadline is September 1, 2010. The final submission deadline is November 1, 2010.

Following the success of the first two years of our television showcase for Atlantic Canadian short films, the Atlantic Film Festival Association and CBC Atlantic are pleased to announce a third season of Short Film Faceoff. The critically acclaimed show aired in 2008 and 2009 and brought a new and large mainstream audience for Atlantic Canadian short films and increased profile for their filmmakers.

Films that participated in the 2009 Atlantic Film Festival are automatically entered for consideration in this year’s Short Film Faceoff. In addition, Short Film Faceoff will be seeking new films that have been produced in the region in 2009/10. Films chosen for Short Film Faceoff will be eligible for participation in the 30th Atlantic Film Festival in September. Films must be under 12 minutes in length; must not have been previously broadcast on television and must have been produced by Atlantic Canadians. Directors must be available for tapings at CBC Halifax. The exact shooting dates likely be in the last two weeks of May 2010. Again this year, a panel of industry professionals will provide commentary and discuss the creative and technical aspects of the films with the filmmakers on air.

The series also has a competitive component. The panellists will choose their top films and ultimately the viewing public gets to vote for their favourite film. CBC and our sponsors will be offering a prize made up of cash and production services to be used by the winning filmmaker towards his or her next film.

If you are interested in entering your film in this year’s series, please send us a DVD copy of your film c/o:

Short Film Faceoff III
c/o Atlantic Film Festival
1601 South Park Street
Halifax, NS, B3J 2L2

The deadline for entries is May 30, 2010

For films that participated in the 2009 AFF, if you do not wish to have your film considered or if you do not own the broadcast rights, please let us know by May 30th. A jury made up of AFFA, CBC and award sponsors will determine the nine films to air this year.

Do you have a short film script? Maybe it’s your first script — maybe it’s your 100th…

The 6th annual Screenplay Series Workshop offers emerging and established independent filmmakers a valuable part of the script-writing process – a public reading by actors and feedback from screenwriters on your first draft.

The Nickel Independent Film Festival is looking for submissions of short screenplays for its 6th annual Screenplay Series Workshop to be held during the festival in June.

Workshop Description:

Facilitated by Lois Brown, a professional committee comprised of local producers, writers, and filmmakers will select three screenplays from all submissions received. The selected writers will receive a script consultation from a working professional screenwriter a week prior to the workshop. Following this, the writer may choose to do rewrites. On June 25, scripts are rehearsed by professional actors and a guest director in the morning, followed by a public reading in the afternoon. The audience is invited to give feedback to the writers after the reading.

Please drop off or e-mail submissions to:

Nickel Independent Film Festival
197-199 Water St.

nickelfestival@gmail.com

Scripts should be up to 15 pages (shorter is better) in a 12 pt font with page numbers. Please provide contact information with your submission. Writers must be available for the day of the workshop. Co-writers are eligible for submission.

Submission deadline May 15, 2009. Writer notification June 1, 2009.
