It brought Jeanne Beker to Newfoundland and put an emerging filmmaker’s first film on the St. John’s International Women’s Film Festival’s closing night gala screen.

Initiated in honour of Michelle Jackson, a young Newfoundland filmmaker and student mentor who passed away suddenly in 2008, the RBC Michelle Jackson Emerging Filmmaker Award supports emerging female filmmakers residing in Newfoundland and Labrador. The competition is open to female Newfoundland and Labrador filmmakers who have not yet directed a feature film. Applicants are asked to submit a script for a six-minute short film, a production schedule and budget. Scripts will be judged by a selected panel.

The winner will receive close to $40,000 in cash and in-kind production services for their film, and will be mentored by award-winning director and producer Anita Reilly McGee. The winner’s film will premiere on the closing night of the 23rd Annual St. John’s International Women’s Film Festival, on October 20th, 2012, at the Arts and Culture Centre.

Last year’s winner is the Newfoundland and Labrador Arts Council’s 2012 Artist of the Year, Ruth Lawrence, who filmed Two Square Feet, starring Jeanne Beker. The film is about a woman coping with a divorce who meets someone that changes her life forever. Allison White, an up-and-coming producer and director, was the inaugural winner in 2010. She used the prize to make Decoloured, a short film about a colour blind man whose vision is changed when he falls in love.

For instructions on how to apply for the RBC Michelle Jackson Emerging Filmmaker Award, visit the St. John’s International Women’s Film Festival webpage:

NFB Animation Hothouse 8 is Open for Submissions.

Deadline: 5pm Tuesday January 24, 2012
Program Dates: March 05 – May 25, 2012
Theme: “SHEEP DREAMS”

The National Film Board of Canada seeks submissions from emerging (young and not-so-young) filmmakers, creative programmers and artists intrigued by animation art, for the 8th edition of Hothouse, a 12-week paid apprenticeship in full-on, all-inclusive, real-world animation filmmaking.

Edition 8 parameter: include <emerging_technologies>

This year, Hothouse invites you to exploit emerging tools and technologies in your animation. In other words, take maximum advantage of new hardware, software or platforms to create your art. You might use a specific app for capture or animation. You might choose to tell a traditionally animated story on an interactive mobile OS (does the user influence the content?) You might integrate sensing devices for spatial tracking and gesture/facial/voice recognition (think GPS, Kinect, Wii, Siri etc.). Or develop a meaningful micro-narrative using existing engines and assets. To name but a few possibilities of hacking your animation!

Ultimately, the goal is to create a compelling 60-second experience driven by animation, moulded by technology.

Check out full submission details here:

DELT seeks future producers, directors, media-mogul-types, to pitch@Memorial

The people of Newfoundland and Labrador have the guts and gumption to pull off just about anything and Memorial University’s Distance Education and Learning Technologies (DELT) unit believes the province’s students are no different – especially when it comes to the arts.

The unit is daring Memorial University students to submit their ideas for a 3-5 minute movie illustrating the role technology plays in their current educational experience, and how they see technology fitting into education in the future. The pITch@Memorial video contest is a great career opportunity for students who are itching to break into filmmaking, video production and multimedia.

“There is a history of contributing to the media and film sector in this unit, so it’s natural that we’d like to continue in that vein,” said Ann Marie Vaughan, director of DELT. “We’re seeking ideas for short videos that aren’t very conventional, but cutting edge, extremely imaginative and creative, and that push the boundaries of technology in education.”

The top five written entries will continue on to participate in a Dragon’s Den-style live pitch session, during which students will tell a panel of well-known judges who work in film production, criticism and multimedia why their idea should be produced. The session will be broadcast throughout campus and will be available online for a public vote. The top student will receive a paid summer internship in the DELT Studio where they will work with a mentor to shoot and produce their video. That student will also receive a brand new iPad at the end of the summer.

DELT director/producer John Bonnell will be the student mentor and looks forward to both offering advice to and learning from the successful applicant.

“There are a variety of career possibilities within the media services division of DELT, including producer/director, audio technician, videographer, editor, animator, multimedia developer and graphic designer,” said Mr. Bonnell. “I’m always impressed by the creativity and enthusiasm of our students – it can be infectious at times.”

The winner will have access to DELT’s state-of-the-art production facility – Newfoundland and Labrador’s only fully-HD studio, which houses AVID Nitros editing suites, a variety of backdrops, curtains, a white cyclorama and a 400 square foot green screen. The studio contains all the equipment required to produce everything from multi-camera event coverage to documentaries.

Stay tuned to pITch@Memorial’s website (www.distance.mun.ca/pitch) for updates and surprise announcements. The top five finalists, as well as the all-star celebrity panelists, will be revealed next month. For more information on pITch@Memorial, contact Heidi Wicks, communications coordinator (DELT) at (709) 864-2611 or wicksh@mun.ca

The final two deadlines for the Nickel’s 11th edition in June 2011 is coming up very soon so get your films to us as early as possible!

February 7 is the Final Deadline with a submission fee of $25.
February 14 is the ultimate extended deadline with a submission fee of $30.

If you submit by withoutabox, your film must be registered that day and mailed right afterwards in order to meet the programming deadlines. If you are posting, we will accept a postmark of Feb 7 or 14 but REMEMBER that the mail can be deadly slow and if it isn’t in the committee’s hands when they meet in March, this can cause you film to get very limited consideration. So Express Post if you can.

If you are comparing us to other festivals, remember that the Nickel pays a SCREENING FEE each time it shows your film (those who’ve been in our festival, subsequent tours, or special screenings can attest) that is at the CARFAC exhibition rates. We also pay for return postage of your exhibition tape and help you come to the festival, to the best of our abilities. We’re low budget but we make it go a long way.

For those who wish to use withoutabox, this link will take you directly to our form.

We are primarily a shorts festival and we showed 70 films last year so the odds are great! We do accept many genres (see the form for details) and are looking for a wide variety of perspectives.

Look forward to seeing your submissions come our way.

August 3, 2010 (Vancouver, BC) – The 6th Annual Vancouver Women in Film Festival, scheduled to take place March 4-8, 2011 in Vancouver, Canada, officially launched its Call for Submissions today, looking for short and feature film submissions in all genres. The 2010 Festival received hundreds of submissions from all over the world.

All independent filmmakers (women and men) seeking a Vancouver premiere are encouraged to apply. Submissions featuring strong female characters and stories are encouraged. Eligible films must have THREE of the following (one woman may serve in more than one role): a woman as Writer, a woman as Producer, a woman as Director, a woman as D.O.P., a woman as Lead Actor, a woman as Lead Animator / Editor.

“There was such a breadth of vision, expression and storytelling in the submissions we received last year, I’m very excited to see what we’ll be presenting to our audiences in 2011,” says Festival Director and WIFTV Board Member, Roslyn Muir. “In addition, we’ll be bringing back New Media Day, originally introduced in our 2009 festival, where industry experts shed light on new trends and the future of filmmaking in Canada.”

Last year’s opening night feature film, Penelope Buitenhuis’ “A Wake” went on to be part of Telefilm’s Perspective Canada screenings at the 2010 Cannes Film Festival. She was later nominated for Best Director at the DGC 2010 Awards. Writer-director Angelina Cantada, whose film “Let’s Play Boccia!” screened last year, went on to win the $10,000 Omni Television Diversity in Cultures Award at the 2010 Leo Awards in Vancouver.

The Festival is presented by Women in Film and Television Vancouver and is one of our key annual celebration events. In addition to offering independent filmmakers a professional screening opportunity, the festival also serves to build audiences and appreciation for relevant cinema by women.

The festival supports filmmakers with cash awards and artists’ fees. Last year, three filmmakers were the recipients of the Legacy Awards, representing $1500 in cash awards. Award-winning filmmaker Lulu Keating was the 2010 recipient of the Women In the Director’s Chair Feature Film Award, presented by Creative Women Workshops Association, represents industry leadership and support from some of the most significant companies in western Canada and is valued at nearly $100,000.

The early bird postmark deadline is September 1, 2010. The final submission deadline is November 1, 2010.
