She Writes Short Shorts — a summer screenwriting intensive for women.

The Atlantic Filmmakers Co-op (AFCOOP) in conjunction with the FILM 5 program and Women in Film and Television – Atlantic (WIFT-AT) is pleased to present a summer screenwriting intensive with screenwriter Tricia Fish, (New Waterford Girl).
The program is designed to foster talent among emerging female screenwriters in the Atlantic region. The workshop will take place in two weekend intensives, Aug. 14th/15th and 28th/29th 2010. Applicants will apply with a short film script suitable for a five – seven minute film. A jury of local screenwriters will select up to ten scripts to be developed through the workshop. Scripts can be any genre.
Through the program, participants will go through a rewrite of their scripts. From the final draft, one film will be awarded the ‘She Writes Short Shorts’ award. The award will be announced at AFCOOP’s FILM 5 party, during the Atlantic Film Festival in September.
Program Structure:
Deadline for Applications: Monday, July 12th 5pm.
Successful applications announced: July 22nd.
Part I: Aug. 14th/15th – Presentation and analysis of individual screenplays, rewrite development, and screenings.
Deadline re-writes: Aug. 25th via email.
Part II: Aug. 28th/29th – Rewrite presentations and analysis, pitching new projects, individual feedback, career development and celebration!
She Writes Short Shorts Award – Winner announced at the AFCOOP party Sept. 19th.
Eligibility:
This program is designed for emerging level screenwriters, defined as either having completed some basic training in screenwriting (through workshops, film school or related study) OR having other relevant experience (i.e. written a short that has been produced, film industry experience or other writing experience).
Applications:
· Deadline – Monday, July 12th 5pm.
· Letter of Intent – (a short cover letter summarizing your screenwriting experience and your reasons for applying to the program).
· Script (in proper script format, 12 point font, 5 – 7pages).
· Resume, filmography or short bio.
Tricia Fish is a best known for writing “New Waterford Girl”, an award-winning feature comedy about a teenager in Cape Breton. With rave reviews from the Village Voice to the New Yorker to the National Post, it started her career as a feature screenwriter. She was named a Variety Magazine “Top Ten Writer to Watch”. Fish attended the Canadian Film Centre and wrote the short “Shift”, starring Nadia Litz, which traveled the world and won a number of awards. Among other things, she has been a writing assistant to the Kids in the Hall, written for a cartoon based on Gene Simmons life “My Dad the Rock Star”, and story edited on many features and TV shows. Fish has been on the Feature Film Advisory committee to Sheila Copps, juried for Telefilm, FUND, and the CFC, as well as working as a story editor at Praxis and for many other individuals. Tricia is a mother of two, and took time out for their early years, and is currently back at it; developing two features with Sienna Films as well as several other projects.

ABOUT FILM 5: FILM 5 is an intermediate level training program for emerging Nova Scotia Writers, Directors and Producers, as well as aspiring film crew. Past participants have included award-winning filmmakers such as Thom Fitzgerald, Andrea Dorfman and Jay Dahl. FILM 5 films have screened at festivals nationally and internationally.
